Processing Community Day 2026, New York
The workshop again, this time for Processing people. Chess on a Launchpad, fireworks on a Midi Fighter, painting with a PipSqueak, and a treasure hunt where the person at the controller is the ghost in the maze.

What happenedโ
October 3 at NYU ITP in Brooklyn, and tickets were free. Every sketch came three ways: p5.js in the browser, Python Mode and Java in the Processing IDE. On the table: PipSqueak joysticks from Masson at useMidi, Circuit Playgrounds, Midi Fighters, two Launchpads and two Trinkeys. The agenda, what to bring and the day-of notes are on the workshop page. The kit became this site.
The previewsโ
Seven short videos went up with the announcement post, in the post's order:
- MIDI Chess. "Long ago, I adapted Go for the Novation Launchpad. At 8x8 it was just a cute demo and always felt a little too small to play real Go, but it's the perfect size for chess!" The board is drawn in Processing, the overlay is a web page, and you can drag pieces on screen and watch the lights follow.
- MIDI Fighter Interactive Visuals. Each bank is a visualisation mode, the twelve buttons below poke at it.
- MIDI Painting with PipSqueak. The brush snaps back to centre. The button splits the canvas in half and mirrors it, "a sort of interactive kaleidoscope painting thingamajig."
- MIDI Fireworks. Banks pick the shell, the grid picks where it bursts.
- MIDI Marquee. Scrolling text on a Launchpad with a
colour picker and an "export as HTML" button that gives you a matching
<marquee>tag. - The Game of Life (MIDI Edition). "Sometimes life is exciting. Sometimes it is boring. Sometimes it is controlled over MIDI and played on DJ equipment."
- The Great MIDI Treasure Hunt. A Zelda-ish maze of 8x8 rooms. One person plays the adventurer on the keyboard, looking at the screen. The other plays "a benevolent, unseen force" on the Launchpad, seeing hints the adventurer cannot, knocking down walls, lighting torches, holding switches.
